It’s All My Fault

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Well, I received some startling news yesterday. I am to blame for how bad the world is today. Yes, me. Throw eggs if you must. I’m readying for law suits. I’ll warn you I don’t have much so participating in a class action suit will likely net you a baby book and a Fig Newton.

How did this revelation come about? I was chatting on line with a group discussing the new HPV vaccine and the ‘supposed’ fact that 25% of girls aged 14-19 have the virus already. I dared to question the accuracy of the study considering most girls under the age of 18 have never had a gynecological exam and would be unlikely participants in such a study. I imagine those included in the study were a handful who were being treated for a known problem. Hardly a strong foundation for launching such an aggressive campaign to suggest one in four girls in junior high have contracted an STD. Never mind the fact that would require at least 50% of junior high school girls be sexually active.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a naive soul living under a rock. I’m fully aware our kids are becoming grossly sexualized and I know more and more are engaging in risky behavior. The messages and influences are everywhere. I am suspect of this report because it was released on the heels of an aggressive push by Merck for its HPV vaccine. This vaccine is expected to rescue the company from its bleak financial position. How handy to imply so many of our youth are sexually active and on the verge of infection. It makes it a lot easier to encourage mandating the HPV vaccine for young girls. A mandated vaccine makes a lot more money than a recommended vaccine. It’s pretty hard to mandate something for adults. Once the females turn 18, the company’s earnings potential dips drastically. It’s not that I know or feel the findings are wrong. I just have no reason to believe they are correct. There is a lot on the line here and I want accurate information.

My concern in the data being incorrect is that it will be used as a platform for other strategies with our youth. On top of mandated vaccinations, I can see sex education in our schools taking on a more extreme form in younger grade levels. I mean, if 50% of 7th and 8th graders are potentially having sex, the schools owe it to our kids to address the issues and teach them how to be safe with their sexuality. In my crystal ball, I can see schools eventually passing out condoms to our kids as an extra precaution. I mean, that’s the responsible thing to do, right? We must keep our kids safe.

Getting back to how I am to blame for the sorry state of the world, an individual I was conversing with felt my inclination to challenge the findings equated to sticking my head in the sand and avoiding the issue of teen sex. Avoidance and running from the problem was the reason our kids were poised to become damaged and infected. He went on to say that a good parent would put their child’s health first and equip him/her with all tools necessary to be safe. To an extent his words ring true with me. I will do what I need to do to keep my daughter healthy and safe. I don’t feel I’m a bad parent, however, for not wanting to put a condom in a 14 year old’s hand and carting her off for her HPV vaccine so she is prepared for some good ole middle school sex.

If 14 year olds are indeed sexually active and contracting STDs, my first reaction is not to start shooting them up with experimental vaccines. It’s not to line their pockets with contraceptives and provide graphic details on all the different types of sex with pros and cons. My first reaction is to stand up and scream at the elements of our society that insist on sexualizing our children. The parents who want to hold on to some shred of hope they can instill morals and values in their children aren’t to blame for how bad the world is. The individuals and organizations that continue to put the almighty dollar they earn for producing filth ahead of the safe and well being of our kids are at fault. The movies, magazines, pop artists, fashion gurus and advertising companies who continue to make raunch, promiscuity and unhealthy choices cool should be the ones on alert. So many companies and individuals are profiting from the continued sexualization of our kids. Now pharmaceutical companies are poised to do the same. Sure, at least they have a more noble angle. Still, a lot more money is generated by our kids being sexy and promiscuous than is generated by our kids making sound and conservative decisions. That should get every parent’s attention.

I’m not removing parents from the equation in the solution. Parents must stay close to the process and be prepared to take action if there seems to be no way to avoid a negative outcome. I certainly don’t want my daugther to get sick or pregnant to prove a point. Parents need to step up to the plate and get more involved in their kids’ lives. They need to do it collectively too. A mother and a father are no match for the multi-million dollar campaigns targeting our children every day. 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 parents might make a difference though. We need to stop buying products promoting (or endorsed by those who promote) irresponsible behavior. We need to quit handing money over to the very people who are acting against the best interests of our kids. We need to demand more information on how our kids are spending their time. We must put our foot down on the clothes our kids are wearing. We need to turn the television & computer off and spend real time with our kids. We need to make it clear what expectations we have of them and why they are important. We need to live in a manner that sets a positive example of the choices we are hoping our kids will make.

Whatever Happened to Aspen?

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Remember when the winter getaway for the stars was Aspen? The gossip magazines were great about showing various celebs stylishly clad in snow gear while braving the mountain elements. Though a few of the 40 and above celebs still head to the slopes, young Hollywood seems to have picked a new winter hot spot. Why go to Aspen when you can go to rehab?

I don’t understand the sudden rage over organized rehabilitation. Don’t get me wrong. I fully support individuals who are struggling with chemical dependencies seeking out professional help. The road to rehab for many stars, however, seems to start with racial/homophobic slurs, sexual indiscretions or connections to Paris Hilton. Grown adults have chosen to be stupid in public and then want to duck into rehab so the world goes “awwww” instead of “ewwww.” As if some condition was the reason he/she was behaving outside of the norm.

Whatever is going on, there is definitely investment potential in all of this. The Hiltons would be wise to convert some of their underperforming hotels into rehab destination vacations. I’m sure many of Paris’ friends would sign on as clientele. Starbuck’s could open a few stores on site. Surely the addiction to pricy caffeine isn’t being challenged in rehab. Gift shops could distribute souvenirs like T-shirts with the words “I’ve been to rehab. What’s your excuse?” Let’s see if entrepreneur Donald Trump doesn’t jump in on the action. He’s already had a taste of rehab through his supervision of Miss U.S.A. Maybe he’ll ditch “The Apprentice” (it’s getting old anyway) for a more modern show like “The Resident”. Rehab residents could go on the show and The Donald can send one home a week with the slogan “You’re Cured!”

This may be out of line…

All individuals with ties to establishing the true paternity of Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter need to quit their bickering and submit whatever is needed for testing immediately. Anna’s DNA, the baby’s DNA and the DNA of any man who feels he may be the father should be analized immediately and without anymore of these ridiculous legal maneuvers. All of the infighting is out of line. I’m tired of hearing about the money. I’m also tired of hearing about the rights of the adults (alive and deceased) involved. This is about a baby girl who will one day be old enough to want to know (and deserve to know) the true identity of her father. If the opportunity to know the truth is squandered, this poor little girl will be robbed of a basic fact of her existance. The longer this goes on, the more this private matter will play out in a public forum. If those around her truly love her they will move quickly to prevent things from getting worse.

U-Haul

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

I passed a U-Haul truck today.  It was abandoned alongside the road with its hood up.  The truck apparently was another workforce casualty.  The U-Haul trucks should seriously consider forming a union so they have a voice in improving their work environment.  They are forever dying on the job.  I see them on the shoulder of the road more than I see them rolling down the highway.  Conditions must be horrible.  If U-Haul doesn’t start investing in the health and well being of its fleet, it might as well change its name to U-Tow.

She’s Terrified???

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

The gossipy side of news is reporting Nicole Richie is terrified she may go to jail for her latest episode of drunk driving. You may have heard the story of how she had been reportedly driving the wrong direction down a freeway. She managed to escape tragedy. Fortunately she found a way to drive with traffic on a different busy road. By the time police caught up with her, she had given up driving completely and was stopped in the fast lane of a freeway. It’s a miracle no one was injured or killed as a result of her irresponsible behavior that day. This is her 2nd DUI. I’m guessing there have been times she’s gotten behind the wheel intoxicated and escaped detection by law enforcement. Miss Richie may be afraid she is going to go to jail. I am equally afraid she won’t. I don’t feel celebrities should be punished in an extreme way as if to make an example out of them. Not receiving punishment, however, is the other end of extreme and it is also unacceptable.

Now That’s News

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

It’s being reported today on the major news outlets that mankind is to blame for global warming. Isn’t that a shocker? And here I thought it was all of the elephants tooting in Africa. Maybe now that we’ve identified the source of the problem we can finally get down to finding a solution.

My husband pointed out to me the other day how much the temperature spiked after 9/11 when planes weren’t flying. We’ve actually reached a point where we need pollution to keep from overheating. So pollution is destroying and protecting our environment at the same time. Hmmmm, talk about a pickle.

Logical Order

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

People seem less inclined to do things in a logical order. A systematic approach is too boring, I suppose. Most have read about the 67 year old woman who gave birth to twins recently. She is a prime example of straying from a natural sequence of events. She has announced publicly she is seeking a man to be a father to her children. Um, isn’t it usually a good idea to find a father first? I mean a lot of planning went into this endeavor. The pregnancy was intentional and sought out. Great amounts of time and money were invested to bring these babies to life. How odd the task of securing a father was left until the end. Talk about horses pushing a cart from behind. Of course, not securing a father in advance isn’t the only side step from conventional ways in this story. The norm of securing a mate, having children, raising children and then growing old has been replaced by growing old, having children, looking for a mate and raising your children quick enough that they will be able to tend to you by the time you are in diapers again.

I suppose some could look at this story as a victory for women. Finally women are able to conceive children later in life like men. The thing is, men’s equipment still works later in life without medical intervention. This woman’s womb had been turned off for years. Artificial means and advanced technology were necessary to make this pregnancy happen. Wombs turn off for a reason. Our divine creator was wise enough to know pregnancy after a certain stage in life wasn’t a good idea. By natural order, women typically have up to 25 years to secure a pregnancy. Isn’t that enough time to get the job done in the order nature intended? It may not be fair that men can have children into their 70’s and women can’t. Life’s not fair though. Men in their 70’s probably don’t think it’s fair that women can sleep through the night without getting up to pee every 2 hours. Nature knows best and we shouldn’t fight it so often.

I’d Like to Announce My Candidacy

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

Just kidding. I’m not running for President. Seems like everyone else is though. Just as I was enjoying the 2 months of peace since the assault of the midterm elections, here we are gearing up for 2008. Let’s all join in a collective groan. Grrrrrrroan.

The interesting thing is the candidates seem about as enthused as I am over the whole process. Have you heard some of the announcement speeches? Many look about as excited as someone facing a root canal. I can’t say I blame them. I’m not sure I’d be doing jumping jacks at the prospect of taking the reins in the middle of this mess. I may not be all that thrilled with some of the candidates, but I can’t help but respect their willingness to face things head on that make me want to hunker down in a closet and hide.

Early on, there are a few candidates who are going on and on about how it is time to make a change after 6 years of George Bush. Um, they do know he’s not allowed to run again in 2008, right? It’s time to make a change whether he is beloved or not. Since Dubya is not a contender for 2008, I really hope the candidates (Republican or Democrat) do what they can to talk about themselves and their actual opponents. This could be an insanely long 22 months if all the talk will be of the past. The past has been well documented by our faithful 24 hour news channels. Frankly, I’m tired of hearing about who has done what and I’m more interested in learning what others plan to do.

Not Guilty?

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Many people in the States have been following the story of the two missing Missouri boys who were found last week in the apartment of Michael Devlin. Mr. Devlin allegedly abducted Ben Ownby after he was dropped off near his home by a school bus. Fortunately, a classmate remembered seeing a truck in the vicinity of the bus stop and was able to accurately describe it to police. Police spotted a vehicle resembling the truck the child had described at an apartment building. Inside the apartment of the vehicle’s owner police found the missing boy and another boy who had been missing for over 4 years. Coincidence, I think not.

Mr. Devlin was arraigned this morning in Union, Missouri. He entered a plea of not guilty to charges of kidnapping 13 year old Ben Ownby. I understand the value of our country’s judicial system. Yes, everyone deserves due process. It is so frustrating to me when people who have clearly committed a crime clog up our courts, drain tax payer money and insult our intelligence with creative twists on why they are innocent or should be excused from punishment. I have no time for the Michael Devlin’s of this world. There is no doubt in my mind innocent people are accused of crimes on a regular basis. I can’t help but believe it makes it harder for the truly innocent to escape conviction with individuals like Mr. Devlin tainting our image of the Not Guilty plea. Of course, maybe I’m being too harsh and jumping to conclusions. Maybe young Ben was disenchanted with his life and begged Mr. Devlin, who just happened to be nearby, to kindly whisk him away in an old beat up truck to a new life in a tiny apartment with another missing boy and a strange man with child pornography on his computer.

It’s 5 to Midnight

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Have you heard the news about the Doomsday Clock? That’s the clock that factors in nuclear proliferation and environmental degradation to determine how much longer we have until the apocalypse. According to top scientists we are now hovering dangerously at 11:55 p.m. Yikes! News like this always makes me panic a bit. I scurried through the house turning off all unnecessary appliances and lights. It’s my small contribution to slowing down the journey to 11:56. I’d deactivate my nuclear bombs, but I can’t remember where I put them.

Watching my 9 month old daughter play on the floor as Fox News runs in the background with this report of impending catastrophe is difficult. What kind of future is she facing? There’s no way to know how far those remaining 5 minutes will stretch in real time. Rock star scientist Stephen Hawking has been quoted as saying the survival of the human race depends on our ability to colonize space. Uh-oh. If we can’t turn off light switches, carpool, stop driving gas guzzling cars, refrain from blowing each other up and make recycling a part of our daily ritual, how the heck are we going to pull of the incredible task of identifying a new planetary home, developing transport to get there and creating a society that will suddenly find a way to get along more effectively in its new digs? Fixing Earth 1 seems much easier than finding and developing Earth 2. Of course, there is the distinct possibility our world’s leaders aren’t going to do what it takes to fix Earth 1 or develop Earth 2. I suppose if humanity must come to an end, we can at least be comforted in the knowledge we’ve had a pretty good run.
